About Us

How We Started

Joel began his construction career at Manhattan architecture/engineering firms like Armstrong Childs, and Richard Dattner & Associates while Rosemary added to her skills as an artist and interior designer by studying at Pratt Institute and The Art Students' League and being part of the editorial staff of Progressive Architecture Magazine.

The couple met in New York City in the late 1960's. The huge grass-roots movement of the times inspired them to follow their dream of a more self-sufficient life, integrated with nature, far from the crush and noise of the city they'd grown up in. They got their chance in the early '70's when they bought a small piece of property in rural upstate New York.

Joel spent virtually every weekend, holiday and vacation for the next three years building a small, quirky house on their land. In the summer of 1977, the couple and their two young children finally moved into their new country home.

Soon after the move, Ross-Fox Construction was formed, and for the next several years Joel honed his skills on additions, renovations, and reconstruction. With the addition of Rosemary's interior detail work, the couple was ready to offer a full line of services to the prospective home-builder. Since then, Ross-Fox has completed over fifty original homes and renovations in New York's Hudson Valley. Rosemary and Joel's unique collaborative style has been duly noted by such publications as House Beautiful, Luxury Homes, and Victoria Magazine.

Joel's extensive, hands-on experience as both designer and contractor gives him a tremendous advantage over those who do only one or the other. He is both the sensitive artist who has the grand inspiration and the knowledgeable, practical craftsman who provides the "perspiration" that makes it all really work. He and Rosemary see each project through from conception to birth, and the couple's collaborative skills only continue to grow after more than thirty years' experience.
